The Sinking of the Maine

Americans have always named there ships, Maine was the name of an American battleship in the Havana harbor which protected Americans interests in Cuba. On February 15th, 1898 during the night, the ship had been attacked. Who was there to blame? The Spanish, it was said that they had an underground mine.The most likely source they would've used was heat from a fire in the coal bunker adjacent to the 6-inch reserve magazine. This tragedy lead to, 266 American deaths. President McKinley then sent Spain a final demand, which later on lead to war. "Indications are that an explosion produced the conditions there," said commander George a converse In 1976 they came toa decision   that the Spanish were the cause of the explosion.
